Scientist who stole body freed from jail. Key West, Florida, October 12, 1940 (UP). Friends today posted $1,000 bond and obtained release fromjail of Carl tanzler von Cosel, aged scientist who stole the body of a young woman he loved from her burial vault and kept the body in his home for seven years. Von Cosel will be tried in county criminal court in November on charges of "maliciously disturbing" the grave of Mrs. Elena Mesa, who died in 1931.

Biography:

She was born on September 7, 1889 to Carl Tanzler. She died in May 1977 in Zephyrhills, Florida and was buried in Oakside Cemetery. As of 2008 she has no permanent grave marker, just this temporary one left by the funeral home.
